Tree Trunk

‘Psychotherapy’, ‘Counselling’, 'Psychology’ or Clinical Practice' and 'Therapy' offer ways to explore personal experiences in order to inform meaning, increase individual understanding, process emotions and cognitive processes that can directly or indirectly impact motivation and goal setting, recovery from difficulties, or exploration of one's relationships to others, to oneslef even to life itself.

No one is an expert on what is the correct way to live life and as therapy is a space to dwell on real life issues and areas of focus it should be engaged as such. The practitioner brings their education, knowledge and experience and engages in a therapeutic dialogue with the person that brings their experience and knowledge of themselves and life, in a non judgemental way and with openess in order to reach to a common assessment of what is being discussed.

Therapy is carried out in the 'space' of a relationship; between the practitioner and the service user/ client. It is very important that there is a good match between therapist and client and a 'felt sense' in order to find the right person to work with is imparative. "Does it feel right to work with this person? Does it feel like, or is there a potential to feel like, therapy can be helpful in this instance?"

Therapy, whether is used for exploration or in order to achieve a focused result, can be challenging. It is important to engage with incorporating qualities such as attentiveness, compassion, courage, and honesty and communicating always respectfully with acceptance and caring enquiry.

"...psychotherapy is also a dialogue of depth. No matter how the problem or issue initially presents itself, it often connects to important life questions about how we want to live, and what is meaningful to us. These ‘existential’ questions make us human and inspire us to contemplate together.."

Madison, G. (2025)

In the space of therapy emotions are also explored and processed and an inclusive approach is important in order to accept the concept and the individuality of each person's experience of emotions. This openess is supposed to also welcome parts of the person that have been rejected, forgotten or judged in the past, negotiate the relationhsip to those parts and inform creative actions and desicions in the micro or macro level.

Each client decides how they would like to work, but including all levels – cognitive, behavioural, relational & emotional – in order to achieve their therapy goals. A review of the whole process is often used and welcomed whenever suitable.

It is easily understood that trust is essential within therapy and sealed ethically with strict confidentiality.
